Bella Hadid Is Giving the Clueless Look a Sexy, Dark New Makeover
At 20, Bella Hadid sure knows a lot about ’90s fashion. First she stepped out in platform loafers (a nod to a Great Expectations–era Gwyneth); then it was squared-off sunglasses (totally Matrix); and earlier this week, she championed flannel in all its grungy glory. But as much as the decade was about grit, it was also rooted in kitsch and fun. (Think, furry pastel twinsets, kicky plaid cheerleader skirts, and white knee socks with everything.)
Even plaid was given a fresh new look thanks to Cher Horowitz in Clueless. Amy Heckerling’s cult 1995 film helped spawn a new order of preppy schoolgirl chic that we still attribute to the ’90s today.
Hadid clearly has the flick in her Netflix queue, as she frequently channels Alicia Silverstone’s kooky character in her everyday wardrobe. Earlier this year, Hadid paid homage in a furry duster—a Cher favorite (remember that brocade number she wore with her red dress by Alaïa, “like, a totally important designer” at the Val party?). And yesterday in London, Hadid went with an abbreviated version in a fur-trim cardigan from her Chrome Hearts x Bella collection.
This time, Hadid styled it with a leather miniskirt (also from her line) that looked as if it could have been plucked from Horowitz’s closet, particularly with the embellished closures matched to straight-pin barrettes in her hair. Hadid paired her tiny white baby tee embroidered with the holy cross with a coordinating chain-link crucifix. The necklace itself was a dead ringer for an accessory Cher wears during a scene in which she’s swiping on dark brown lip liner—a beauty look Hadid also had down pat. She tied everything together with a chic mini handbag, and traded in knee socks and platforms for Saint Laurent pumps and bare legs. The end result read like Cher Horowitz after a modern-day gothic makeover.
